the political map of Serbia

The territory of the municipality of Dimitrovgrad, which amounts to 481 square km, is characterized by mountain forms of relief (the Stara planina, Greben and their slopes), and the valleys of the Nisava, Visocica, Jerma and Lukavacka reka rivers. The municipality is divided into five regions (Visok, Zabrdje, Ponisavlje, Burel and Derekul) with 43 inhabitated places.

The climatic conditions of the municipality are determined by its geographical location, latitude and its height above sea level (which ranges from 450 to over 1000 m), then, by its distance from the larger water resources, by air currents, relief forms and the like. According to the mentioned conditions, the territory of Dimitrovgrad is placed in the zone of moderate continental climate (valleys of the Nisava, Jerma and Lukavacka reka rivers), and up to mountain continental climate (in mountain regions).

Traces of settlements on the territory of today's Dimitrovgrad date back to prehistoric and antique times (the road Via militaris went by over there), which is witnessed by numerous displays of the museum collection in the National Library of Dimitrovgrad. Until 1950, the name of the town was Caribrod, and it had been called by that name by many authors in the middle ages. From 1433 to 1877, these regions had been occupied by the Turks. Until the end of the First World War, Caribrod had been a part of Bulgaria , and since 1920 it has been a part of Serbia .

Dimitrovgrad has got great potentials when transit tourism is considered, because the main road courses (the highway and the railroad) which connect Europe with the Near East , go by over there. Apart from transit tourism, the major tourist potentials of Dimitrovgrad are the Stara Planina, the Cave of Petrlas , the lakes of Smilovci, the valley of the Jerma river, the Monastery of Poganovo, as well as country tourism, which is especially favoured by the unpolluted environment and the diversity of plant and animal species.
